July 11 - Phoenix, Arizona

From Mesa Verde we spent some time in Gallup, New Mexico. We didn't realize until we got there that Gallup was really lame and sketchy but we had already scheduled and paid for a campsite at the local KOA. We didn't realize that the KOA was really lame and sketchy until we got there. It was clearly designed for RVs because our "campsite" was located in a gravel parking lot. After being totally disappointed by this small part of NM, we ate some Denny's and went to go see Public Enemies, new Johnny Depp movie. Heart Bubbles. I think that was the only cool thing. Oh wait, there was also this hotel we walked around that was famous for housing all the western actors from back in the day because the Cowboy Westerns were filmed not far from Gallup. That was kind of cool.

After fleeing Gallup we drove to Phoenix, Arizona where we were to stay with Jason's friends (and had only minor car trouble in Flagstaff, Arizona. Nothing some industrial wire couldn't fix!). Turns out they were actually on vacation on the east coast but still allowed us to stay in their home! It was great! Real beds, real food, and HBO! I think I watched about 6 hours of an Entourage marathon one day. The first night we were in Phoenix we were directed to try out an awesome Mexican joint that was actually built around a small pond with ducks swimming around. Really neat until that ducks quack at you for scraps. Then we went to the weekly rodeo. I had never been to a rodeo before but it is fascinating! I think I found the whole environment more interesting than that actual show (which I mostly watched while covering my eyes). We met a few guys there who explained the rules and logistics of rodeo to us and then were adamant about buying us beers, shots, and inviting us over for a BBQ the next night. We never heard from them again after that night. Yet, they were very kind for buying us booze.

This is his "Rodeo" face

Rodeo people...
One guy even got knocked out for a few minutes after a bull stepped on his head! Yikes!
We spent a total of three nights in Phoenix. We ate dirt pudding, watched HBO, and tried to avoid leaving the house due to the intense 115 degree heat outside. Jason caught a mild strain of Valley Fever while there. He was told by his friends later that many new comers to the area get it from something in the dust carried on the wind. Spooky. He was fine after a few days. I would have loved to check out more of Arizona if it hadn't been as hot as the hinges to hell outside.
